Event Description

Full Description:
The Centre for Marine Science (CMS) is happy to invite you to our 3rd marine postgraduate student seminar of the semester, next Tuesday 26th of May, at 1pm.
The seminar will be held on Zoom, meeting ID https://uqz.zoom.us/j/94227727931?pwd=WWFjcUJpQzExQXcyTjAxLzdCMWZvdz09 (Note that this is a password protected Zoom meeting. Please contact marine@uq.edu.au for the password. Further zoom details can be found below or on our Facebook page 'UQ Marine').

Please join us in exploring the fascinating sensory world of two marine organisms. PhD students Lily Fogg and Heather Middleton will bring us from the dark visual world of a group of deep-sea reef fish to the olfactory realm of epaulette sharks social behaviour:

1) 'Over to the dark side: the visual development of a ‘deep-sea’ reef fish'
Lily Fogg, PhD candidate, QBI
Fish have evolved diverse visual systems that match their diverse ecological demands. However, fish experience ecological shifts on developmental, through to evolutionary timescales, and so have to adapt to seeing and surviving in a changing world. In my talk, I will discuss how a family of reef fish known as
Holocentridae (squirrelfish and soldierfish) adapt from seeing in a bright environment as larvae to a dim
night-time reef environment as adults. I will also touch on how the deep-sea ancestry of holocentrids might hold the key to resolving a 60-year old mystery.

2) 'Understanding the neuroethology of pheromone detection in elasmobranchs: An attempt'
Heather Middleton, PhD candidate QBI, IMB
Elasmobranchs, sharks, skates and rays, are known to have an impressive sense of smell. However, how this sense is used for the detection of conspecifics, or how it mediates social and reproductive behaviours through the use of pheromones is largely unknown. Here, I’ll briefly compare the elasmobranch and teleost olfactory systems regarding pheromone detection and present preliminary behavioural observations of the response of an epaulette shark, Hemiscyllium ocellatum, to conspecific odours. I’ll also discuss unanswered questions and how I’d intended to proceed before the rise of COVID-19.

We hope to see you on Zoom next Tuesday!
Cheers,
The Centre for Marine Science
