Event Description

Full Description:
The Centre for Marine Science (CMS) is happy to invite you to our 2nd marine postgraduate student seminar of the semester, next Tuesday 28th April, at 1pm.
The seminar will be held on Zoom, meeting ID https://uqz.zoom.us/j/95248819689 (more Zoom meeting details below or on our Facebook page 'UQ Marine').

Please join us for two thought-provoking talks on the theme of climate change and conservation from PhD students Nur Arafeh Dalmau and Craig Heatherington:

1) “Extreme marine heatwaves alter kelp forest community near its equatorward distribution limit”
Nur Arafeh Dalmau, PhD candidate, School of Biological Sciences
The 2014-2016 warming event in the California Current System accounted for ∼50% of marine heatwaves days in the past 37 years, with the highest maximum temperature intensities peaking at 5.9°C above average in Baja California, Mexico. We report biomass declines in giant kelp and changes in the community structure. Our results suggest that the effect of global warming can be more apparent in sensitive species, such as sessile invertebrates, and that warming-related impacts have the potential to facilitate the establishment of tropical and invasive species.

2) “Influence of stratigraphy in the erosion of Bribie Island spit”
Craig Heatherington, PhD candidate, School of Civil Engineering
Sea-level rise will lead to substantial changes to coastal geomorphology over the coming century and it is imperative to understand the implications.
This includes the underlying stratigraphic influences on seabed morphology and the historical context with which they have formed.
In South East Queensland, and particularly the coastal zone surrounding Bribie Island spit in Northern Moreton Bay, coastal erosion is a significant concern for residents and stakeholders. The accelerated erosion of the spit and discovery of indurated sand horizons in nearshore regions both above and below the seabed create a convergence of the past influencing the present.

We hope to see you on Zoom next Tuesday!
Cheers,
The Centre for Marine Science

Note: The following seminar will be Tuesday, 26th May. More information available at: https://marine.uq.edu.au/content/seminar-series or on our Facebook page 'UQ Marine'.
