Title: “The eye as a window to the brain: retinal imaging biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease'
Abstract:
Retinal imaging has long held the promise of providing biomarkers of diseases of the central nervous system. A variety of ocular imaging biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease have been described, however none have yet been adopted in clinical practice. A/Prof van Wijngaarden and his team have recently reported first in-human evidence of a novel retinal imaging biomarker that is associated with brain amyloid-beta levels. The team has combined non-invasive, in vivo hyperspectral imaging in conjunction with artificial intelligence image analysis methods to identify a retinal signature of Alzheimer’s disease. Additional studies are underway to establish whether this may serve as a low cost and convenient screening tool for the disease and as an adjunct to clinical studies of disease-modifying therapies.
