Title: 'Time-series metabolomics and integrative genomics of age-associated complex diseases'
Abstract: Ville-Petteri Mäkinen's current work focuses on the molecular determinants of human phenotypes and their significance to chronic morbidity such as obesity, diabetic complications, heart disease and dementia in later life. He holds an EMBL Australia Group Leader position in the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) in Adelaide, and his research group is affiliated with the Computational Systems Biology Program and the Hopwood Center for Neurobiology. In this talk, I will introduce examples where we have successfully investigated synergistic profiles of vascular risk factors to provide new insight into the consequences of metabolic dysfunction. For instance, we have extensive experience in metabolic subtyping within human cohorts, and how the subtypes predict diabetic complications. Furthermore, I will discuss how to leverage genomics data to identify pathogenic processes. I will also reflect upon the study designs and methods we have developed and used, and discuss the challenges we are currently facing at the intersection of epidemiology and molecular biology.
