Event Description

Full Description:
We are interested (disturbed!) by a drift in public debate towards denial of facts; where advocates critics of particular policies or causes simply deny the veracity of their opponents claims – whatever the evidence. We’ve entered into a world where the ideas of ‘alternative facts’ and ‘fake news’ seem to be gaining increasing traction and legitimacy. Why is this happening, what are the political implications? And how do policy makers navigate this treacherous problem? In this Flashpoint we explore these issues from different perspectives ranging from the anti-vaccination campaign, to climate change, and to the on-line pronouncements of Donald Trump.

Panel event with Professor Brian Head POLSIS, A/Prof Kelly Fielding and Dr Nicholas Carah from School of Communication and Arts and Dr Owain Williams from School of Public Health
