Event Description

Full Description:
Professor Christian Leuprecht

This paper examines political fragmentation and alliances among armed non-state actors in North and Western Africa. Using new techniques in network analysis. It argues that groups with similar allies and foes have similar patterns of aggression. In a region where alliances are fluid and actors often change sides, the propensity to use political violence correspond to a group’s position in the social network.

Professor Christian Leuprecht is Matthew Flinders Fellow in the Centre for Crime Policy and Research at the Flinders University of South Australia, on leave from the Royal Military College of Canada. He is president of the International Sociological Association’s Research Committee 01: Armed Forces and Conflict Resolution, and a United Nations Security Structure Expert.
