Title: Déjà vu and reminiscences (data from intra-cerebral recordings)
Abstract: Illusions of inappropriate familiarity with the current experience (déjà vu) and hallucinatory recall of memories are symptoms reported by patients with epilepsies. Pathophysiological hypotheses have been put forward, involving either amygdala and hippocampus, lateral temporal neocortex or both. Recent data acquired during presurgical investigations through intracerebral recordings are in favor of a critical role of rhinal and para-hippocampal cortices. Different modes of synchronization between entorhinal, perirhinal cortex, hippocampus and visual cortex underlie emergence of déjà vu and recollection of memories. Those two cognitive pathological experiences share the same features as déjà vu and reminiscences or dream-like flashbacks in healthy people. As such, they illustrate how dysfunctional activation of a dual memory system can help modeling of their tight interaction.
