Event Description

Full Description:
The Paralympic Games are the third largest sports event in the world. Systems of classification are a unique and integral component of para-sport, providing processes and procedures for establishing who is eligible to compete, and for assigning athletes to a sports class. The key feature of a class is that it should comprise athletes who have impairments that cause approximately the same amount of disadvantage in a particular sport. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is the global governing body for Paralympic sport and in 2013/4, the IPC established three Classification Research and Development Centres, one at the University of Queensland (Australia) focused on classification of physical impairments, one at Vrije University Amsterdam (the Netherlands) focused on vision impairment and one at KU Leuven (Belgium) focused on intellectual impairment.

The Centres provide scientific leadership in the area of classification, not only conducting projects which aim to improve the evidence-based underpinning Paralympic classification, but fostering classification research programs across each of the 27 Paralympic sports and assisting with the translation of research findings into classification practice.

This seminar presented by Drs Sean Tweedy, Emma Beckman and Mark Connick from the UQ School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences will comprise 3 presentations currently being prepared for the Paralympic movement's peak scientific event, the 5th VISTA conference in Girona, Spain.
