ABSTRACT
Macadamia (Macadamia integrifolia and M. tetraphylla) is an Australian native, evergreen nut tree adapted to the subtropics of Queensland and northern NSW. It is the basis of an international industry producing highly valued kernel. Australia is a world leader in production with about 6 million trees planted on 17,000 ha. Industry funding for an Australian breeding program commenced in 1996 and over 3,500 hybrid seedlings were produced and field planted from 1998 to 2003. A second generation of hybrid seedlings is currently being produced with strategies to improve breeding efficiency, use wild species and screen for new rootstocks. Peach (Prunus persica) is native to China but can be grown in subtropical Queensland using low-chill cultivars with adaptation to warm winters. The industry funded low-chill peach breeding program will be described and compared to our macadamia breeding.
About A/Prof. Bruce Topp
Dr Bruce Topp is a fruit and nut breeder based at the Maroochy Research Facility at Nambour. He is leads industry funded research projects on Macadamia Breeding and Conservation and Low-chill Stonefruit Cultivar Breeding and Evaluation. His areas of research interest include methods to improve breeding efficiency through use of quantitative and molecular techniques, studies of germplasm diversity in relation to adaptation, disease resistance breeding, consumer preference testing and the evaluation of novel fruits.
