Title: Cortical-hippocampal interactions in adaptive decision making
Abstract:
The brain has the remarkable ability to quickly and flexibly adjust behavioural choices when faced with unanticipated changes in the world. Implementing these changes involves multiple regions of the brain but how interaction between these regions support changes to decision making remains unclear. We investigated the interaction between two regions involved in memory and decision making, the anterior cingulate cortex and the hippocampus. We identified network changes in cortical activity coincident with hippocampal sharp-wave ripples, events during which the hippocampus can reactivate sequences of place cells reflecting possible future trajectories. Furthermore, these changes reflect the operative behaviour context. This mode of cortical-hippocampal interaction could provide a mechanism where information about future trajectory options from the hippocampus is combined with cortical representations to influence adaptive decisions.
