Event Description

Full Description:
Research Cluster for Chinese Entrepreneurial Studies Public Lecture: Researching Chinese-Australian History - in China & in the community
Dr Michael Williams (Research Cluster for Chinese Entrepreneurial Studies)
The now well-recognised transnational nature of Chinese-Australian history implies that much of the research necessary to understand this history lies in China itself. This talk discusses the significance of China based material to Chinese-Australian history and explores some of the historical material to be found in China ranging from newspapers and overseas Chinese magazines, to archival collections, buildings, oral history and even material originating in Australia. The findings from a recent research trip to the South China county of Zhongshan will also be illustrated.

The implications for the future of research of Chinese-Australian history in terms of the need for a more bilingual approach and the possibilities of historical tours and joint projects will be canvassed. Finally the question is asked: What role has the Chinese-Australian community to play in this history? A question partly answered in discussion of the Chinese Australian Historical Society and a range of possible projects.

Michael Williams is an historian of the Chinese Diaspora and is a founding member of the Chinese Australian Historical Society. His dissertation at the University of Hong Kong employed oral history and archival research to examine the links of the villages of the Pearl River Delta with the Pacific Ports of Sydney, Hawaii and San Francisco. His current research involves a history of popular perceptions of the Dictation Test, historical comparatives of the Chinese and Italian Diasporas, and of Australia’s pre-1949 Chinese-Australian history with its post-1989 history.
