Event Description
- Full Description:
- The Sustainable Minerals Institute is hosting a seminar this week by Prof. Rauno Sairinen and Mr. Jukka Sihvonen, from the University of Eastern Finland. They will be discussing 'Mining - Society Relations in Finland: from one big conflict case towards regional and responsible governance.' It is important to analyse and understand conflict situations in mining in order to improve operations, society relations and patterns of governance. When mining companies lose trust in the public media, it is very hard to get it back. Regional planning and wider stakeholder communication can offer some ways for improved governance of various conflicting interests. This presentation will analyse environmental disaster and conflict in the Talvivaara mine case and provide analysis on regional planning policies concerning the Kittilä mine in Finnish Lappland. Rauno Sairinen is an environmental policy professor at the University of Eastern Finland (Joensuu). He is also a scientific leader at the Institute for Natural Resources, Environment and Society and has been appointed as Honorary Professor in the CSRM. His major research themes are environmental and natural resources governance, social impact assessment, mining policies, policy instruments and community planning. Project researcher Jukka Sihvonen is a social geographer from the University of Eastern Finland. During recent years his research has focused on the interaction between mining, community development, local governments and land use planning.
