Event Description

Full Description:
Dr Joshua Fisher, Director The Earth Institute, Columbia University, is presenting a seminar on 'Natural resource management as a strategy for conflict prevention: Lessons from the Peruvian Amazon. While conflict is often unavoidable in extractive industry activities, creative management approaches open opportunities for constructive engagement between operators and their impacted stakeholders. Dr Fisher has used conflict sensitive conservation methodology in the Peruvian Amazon in relation to artisanal and small-scale mining and hydrocarbon conflict. In this seminar he will discuss these experiences and the lessons learned. Dr Joshua Fisher is the Director of the AC4 research consortium at The Earth Institute, Columbia University. His work focuses on understanding the environmental drivers of social conflict and exploring opportunities to use resource management as a tool for conflict prevention, with particular emphasis in extractive industry related issues. He has ongoing field projects in protected areas in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia-Pacific and South America.
