Event Description

Full Description:
This paper explores roles which the sea played in the developed of prehistoric Aegean society. Images of the sea are some of the earliest representations of the natural world in the Aegean. Ships and fish are present in its earliest written script, Linear A. This paper uses archaeological evidence to highlight the role that fishing played in the development of this region’s seafaring and trade. It explores the environmental and technical constraints which circumscribed the exploitation of fisheries in the prehistoric Aegean. In doing so it focusses on the Mesolithic and Neolithic site of Youra in the Sporades and the rich assemblages of fish bones which have recently been unearthed there.
