Event Description

Full Description:
Ian Hesketh is a postdoctoral research fellow working with Peter Harrison on the “Science, Progress and History” project, funded by the Templeton World Charity Foundation. Most broadly, his research considers the relationship between history, science, and religion in nineteenth-century Britain. His first book, Of Apes and Ancestors: Evolution, Christianity, and the Oxford Debate, examined the early public debates surrounding the publication of Darwin’s Origin of Species and their early historical memorializations. His second book, The Science of History in Victorian Britain, considered the normative scientific methodologies promoted by professionalizing English historians. Before taking up his current position, Ian was the Assistant Editor and Project Manager of The Oxford History of Historical Writing, 5 vols. (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2011–12).
