Commonwealth Supported Students

Commonwealth supported students include Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens, who are enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place.

HECS-HELP options for Commonwealth supported students

Australian citizens and Australian permanent humanitarian visa holders:

  • You can choose to pay your student contribution liability upfront and receive a 20% discount or defer the payment with a HECS-HELP loan.

Australian permanent residents without a humanitarian visa and New Zealand citizens:

  • You must pay your student contribution liability upfront without a discount.

Submit your Request for Commonwealth Support and HECS-HELP form

  • A link to the Request for Commonwealth Support and HECS-HELP form is available via your mySI-net Financial tab on the left.
  • If you do not submit your form by the census date, your enrolment will be deleted. 
  • If you are eligible and choose the deferred payment option, you must provide your tax file number (TFN) (apply for a TFN at www.ato.gov.au. If you fail to provide your TFN by the census date, your enrolment will be deleted.
  • Students choosing or required to pay their student contribution upfront must pay the amount indicated on their invoice by Friday 13 March in semester 1 or by Friday 7 August in semester 2.
  • Commonwealth supported students who change program e.g. from a BA to a BA/LLB, must submit a new Request for Commonwealth Support and HECS-HELP form.

Fee-paying Students

Fee-paying students include domestic undergraduate and postgraduate fee-paying students, international undergraduate and postgraduate students and non-award students.

  • Pay your fees by Friday 13 March (semester 1) or Friday 7 August (semester 2). See the section on paying fees on page 4.

Fee Help

Eligible domestic undergraduate and postgraduate fee-paying students may defer the payment of their tuition fees with a FEE-HELP loan.

  • A link to the FEE-HELP Assistance form is available via the mySI-net Financial tab on the left for eligible students.
  • Requests for FEE-HELP must be submitted before the census date.
  • If you submit a request for FEE-HELP you must provide your tax file number (TFN).

View your Commonwealth Assistance Notice (CAN) for the semester

  • Your CAN will be available to view within 28 days after each semester’s census date.
  • The CAN will include information on the courses in which you are enrolled, your student contribution amounts, any HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP debt or payments made, and Student Learning Entitlement (SLE) usage.
  • You have 14 days to report any errors to the University.

The University does not maintain a record of your accumulated HELP debt. The Australian Tax Office will issue you with a statement of your accumulated HELP debt.

Administrative Charges

The following charges normally apply for late payment or late enrolment .

How to pay?

You can pay by Visa or Mastercard via mySI-net (UQPay) or by BPay. For BPay, the UQ Biller Code is 18119 and the customer reference number is your eight-digit student number.
