September 2015

Hello everyone!

Welcome to our first Spring edition for 2015 (or Autumn for friends in the Northern Hemisphere).

This month in Student Spotlight we hear about the fieldwork adventures of two Centre PhD students. Mallory Peak is in Bosnia-Herzegovina researching the relationships between media, branding and tourism in post-conflict spaces. Tamara Plush has been in South Africa working with local community mobilisers on participatory video projects.

Former Masters student Pamela Ramirez also shares her experiences of working on a citizen newspaper project in Chile.

Welcome to new PhD student Yuwan Malakar who joins us from Nepal to study socio-political constructs of energy deprivation. Also, well done to Dr Shailendra Singh who was awarded his PhD for research into links between news media and peace-building in Fiji.

In news From the Centre, we are proud to present a special issue of the Media Development Journal, now online and free to access. It presents work from many of our PhD students and features a wealth of knowledge, research and innovative thinking in the field of communication and social change.

We also congratulate Centre Associate Dr Scott Downman for his work on the Change Makers magazine project which won the Communication and Media gong at the Queensland Multicultural Awards. The storytelling project uses alternative news gathering techniques to build cross-cultural understanding within the diverse Logan area.

Our featured organisation in this month's From The Field is the Ability Radio Project which engages people with intellectual disabilities in audio storytelling. Plus, we have details on upcoming conferences and the next C4D Network Oceania event.

Find jobs in NGOs, development agencies and not for profit organisations as well as volunteer positions in Opportunities. You can also find out more about careers in communication for social change

As always, we love to hear from you. Please contact us through the links below to get in touch or share your thoughts.
