Congratulations to Professor Paul Hodges who last night received the UQ Award for Excellence in Research Higher Degree Supervision at the UQ Foundation Research Excellence Awards. 

Professor Zlatko Skrbis, Dean of the UQ Graduate School, praised the winner of the Award of Excellence in Research Higher Degree Supervision, Professor Paul Hodges, for “his sustained and innovative contribution to excellence in research supervision at UQ”.

Director of the Clinical Centre for Research Excellence in Spinal Pain, Injury & Health, Professor Hodges has supervised six PhD students to completion at UQ with a further 13 currently under his supervision. His supervisory philosophy strives to harness the productive potential of clinical practice combined with research. He provides strategies and a very active and supportive framework to achieve a healthy balance of creativity with risk, independence with collaboration. His extensive enrichment program both challenges and supports his students to become leaders in their fields and future leaders of research.

CCRE SPINE PhD candidate Dave MacDonald has placed second in the University of Queensland "3-minute thesis" competition. The competition gives Research Higher Degree candidates the opportunity to provide a compelling oration of their current topic of research and is open to all faculties within the University. 

Dave's presentation was titled: "Why do some people keep hurting their back?". The presentation centred on recent findings that suggest decreased and delayed back muscle activity ("A classic case of too little too late") may leave the spine with less back muscle support than is needed to prevent reinjury and contribute to recurring episodes of low back pain.

Professor Paul Hodges has been recognised for his tireless dedication and leadership in the area of spinal pain when this week he was named the winner of the "100 Emerging Leaders" in the Health Category. The competition, which was conducted by the Weekend Australian Magazine, identified the top 100 emerging leaders in the ten categories of Society, Wealth, Sport, Science, Culture, Thinking, Earth, Learning, Health and Innovation.

The NHMRC Centre for Clinical Research Excellence in Spinal Pain, Injury and Health (CCRE SPINE) has been in the media regularly since its official opening in November.

One of our Chief Investigators, Professor Graham Galloway was invited to participate in an episode of 'Scope' on Channel Ten for an insight on Magnets. A/Prof Andrew Cresswell also appeared on ‘Scope’ on 21^st April in a segment on Human Movement. CCRE Spine’s launch also featured in the Australian Physiotherapy Association's December 2007 edition of inmotion magazine.
