About the Centre for Burden of Disease and Cost-Effectiveness

In September 2003 The University of Queensland's School of Population Health created a centre of excellence in burden research - The Centre for Burden of Disease and Cost-Effectiveness. This centre has attracted researchers from both Australian and global burden studies and is in the unique position of being able to deliver high quality burden and cost-effectiveness projects as well as offer high quality training on all aspects of burden methodology.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Centre for Burden of Disease and Cost-Effectiveness is to contribute to improving population health in Australia and internationally through excellence in scholarship and research on how best to translate population heath statistics into evidence that can inform health policy.
Our goal is to achieve national and international recognition as a leading institution for research and training in population health measurement ("Burden of Disease") and economic evaluation ("Cost-Effectiveness").

Key Goals

  • To conduct high quality research studies on measuring population health and conducting economic evaluations in and abroad
  • To assist governments and researchers in developing countries to undertake high quality burden of disease and cost-effectiveness research
  • To train a critical mass of Australian and international researchers who can collate, analyse and present evidence for priority setting to policy makers
  • To educate policy makers how best to make use of evidence for priority setting
